Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection.  In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with special, medicated, dental materials, which restore the tooth to its full function.  Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and have to be removed.  Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution, but what is not realized is that extracting (pulling) a tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth.  Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually lasts a lifetime, although on occasion, a tooth will have to be retreated due to new infections.

Invisalign Clear Braces

Invisalign is not only for esthetic purposes. Invisalign is also used to help with the health of your gums, teeth, and overall oral health. You might consider Invisalign if you could benefit from traditional, metal braces, but have concerns about their appearance. Invisalign fixes many of the same dental problems as traditional metal braces, but it is virtually invisible to the naked eye and can be removed when needed (e.g., for eating or brushing and flossing teeth).  Overcrowding, large gaps between teeth, cross bites, overbites, and under bites are all problems commonly corrected with Invisalign orthodontic treatment. In fact, the results of traditional metal braces and Invisalign are nearly identical in the end.

Tooth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.  Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.  The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.  Tooth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry is the use of dental procedures and techniques to improve the appearance of one's teeth, smile and face. The focus is to alter the teeth in shape, size, color or placement in order to make your smile more pleasing.  Just about any procedure that improves the appearance of your teeth or smile could be considered cosmetic. Whether it is teeth whitening, veneers, or replacing old silver-colored fillings with durable tooth-colored ceramic, if it makes your smile more beautiful, it can fall into the category cosmetic dentistry.

Snoring/Sleep Apnea

We have extensive training to treat snoring and sleep apnea.  We can refer you to a sleep center and/or an ENT doctor to achieve an accurate diagnosis. If appropriate, our doctors can fabricate a custom oral sleep appliance in only two visits; the majority of oral sleep appliances are covered by medical insurance.  Several different devices are available to treat snoring and/or sleep apnea, and should be designed by a trained professional. The most common oral device is a mandibular advancement device. It is similar in appearance to a sports mouth guard, and gently forces the lower jaw forward and down slightly, which aids in keeping the airway open while sleeping.  Oral sleep appliances an excellent alternative for patients who cannot tolerate a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. We offer a variety of appliances including EMA and Narval.  Sleep apnea is a serious condition, and proper diagnosis and treatment can not only reduce your snoring, but can greatly improve your overall health and add years to your life. We welcome you to schedule a no-fee consultation at Middletown Valley Dentistry.

Porcelain veneers, or dental veneers, are thin shells that are laid onto the teeth and bonded to the surface. Although they can be made of different materials, porcelain is frequently used because of its durability and realistic appearance. Porcelain veneers are a more conservative alternative to dental crowns since they require less removal of the tooth’s original surface. With porcelain veneers in place, cosmetic dentistry patients can expect straighter, whiter, and more even teeth.

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that are custom-made to fit over your natural tooth. Crowns are tooth-colored and very esthetic, and will restore the shape, strength and appearance of your tooth. When cemented in place, crowns fully cover the visible portion of your tooth that lies above the gumline.A crown is recommended in a number of situations in order to restore the function and appearance of a tooth. Teeth with very large fillings and/or cavities, cracked or broken teeth, or teeth that have had a root canal often require crowns. A crown will restore a damaged tooth and improve the durability, chewing function and cosmetic appearance of your tooth and protect it from further damage.

Laser Dentistry

Lasers can be used to treat periodontal disease. Current controlled studies have shown that similar results have been found with the laser compared to specific other treatment options, including scaling and root planing alone. Scaling and root planning is a traditional non-surgical therapy used to treat periodontal diseases.

A denture is a removable dental appliance replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue.  They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile.  There are two types of dentures - complete and partial dentures.  Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.  A Partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting.  A Complete denture may be either “conventional” or “immediate.”  A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, usually taking 4 to 6 weeks.  During this time the patient will go without teeth.  Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process.  Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made.  Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.

Periodontal Disease

The word periodontal means “around the tooth”.  Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth.  Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva.  If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar).  When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone.  Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it!  Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages.  Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy.  Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions.  Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease.  Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partial or complete dentures.  Implants provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.  Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (usually titanium) that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone.  The teeth attached to implants are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile!  Dental implants are very strong, stable, and durable and will last many years, but on occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.
